Roy 'Chubby' Brown Venue: York Royal Opera House Date: The full house and few die hard fans wearing 'Chubby tour ' t-shirts leant to the impression that his act was guaranteed to be 'outrageous However it is the latter part of this proclamation I find myself having most problems with; undoubtedly outrageous, but funny - hardly. It seemed the audience compromised the aforementioned fans and characters familiar with his 'work' through various enlightening videos and DVD'S such as 'Jingle Bollocks' and 'King Thong' Needless to say these titles had not entered my collection, so the Opera House was my first introduction to Chubby Browns offensive humour.
Roy is a stand-up comedian who has managed to drape a surprisingly celebrated career over 4 decades. Of the seats only were taken, which remarkably, made me pity him. The bleak turnout forced me to begrudgingly put aside my disapproval of Roy and instead think of him as just another 67 year old man.
Between haunted pussies, ex-army Paralympians and racial censorship, recently comedy has had more than its fair share of controversy. Half the problem is people getting their knickers in a bunch over something taken out of context, or a complete malfunction of their frontal irony cortex. Not a name that generally springs to mind when you think of alternative comedy, but when you look at the vastly varied comedy now featured on television, radio, and clubs around the country, these days Chubby is the alternative. A dinosaur of a bygone era, cast from the airwaves like Robbie Williams, or a lurid, boorish version of Elmer the Patchwork Elephant.
